Adapted Lessons
At Helpful Harmonies Music Therapy, we currently offer adapted lessons in voice, piano, guitar, and ukulele . Since we are a relationship-based practice, our approach to our adapted lessons are very similar to our approach in therapy; we rely on the individual strengths and needs of each individual. We then continue to encourage those areas to connect and grow the love of music with your family member.
How do you adapt lessons to the client’s needs?
Here are a few examples:
(not an all inclusive list)
-
Color-coding music and notes to make it easier to read.
-
Printing at larger fonts to make it easier to read. Also highlighting music to make it easier to visually track.
-
Alternate tuning and chords for stringed instruments.
-
Braille on music for visually impaired individuals.
-
Using a visual schedule to help transition and structure for students.
-
Offering breaks for regulation and over-stimulation
-
Changing the room environment to meet sensory needs (lighting, sound, tactile, etc.)

Some children with disabilities may not benefit from traditional music lessons and at Helpful Harmonies Music Therapy, we specialize in meeting each client where they are with their music interests, accommodations, skills, strengths, and learning preferences.
